C.S. Lewis had a great insight into the biblical command to love your neighbor. He said, “Do not waste your time bothering whether you ‘love’ your neighbor; act as if you did.” And when we do this, we find that acting like we love someone transforms us — suddenly we find our own willingness to love greatly changed. In Lewis’s words, “As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him.”
So on this Marriage Monday, do not worry your pretty little head about whether your heart is 100% full of love your spouse, just act as if it is.
One of my very favorite Bible verses is from Zephaniah 3:17
The Lord your God is with you,
He is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.
This is how God loves YOU. He takes great delight in YOU and rejoices over YOU with singing. Now, act like that’s how you love your spouse. Get out there and break a leg.
